With golf development rising at rapid rates in Asia, great numbers of beginner golfers are walking through the doors at driving ranges. This is a great trend, but in some regards I'm worried about how we are handling the influx. For example, in a bid to maximize profits, many ranges and facilities are jumping to offer more local, non-international coaching, and we are seeing a new competitive teaching landscape since replacing PGA professionals for the “local professionals’’ is increasing in popularity. In theory a more competitive market should benefit the student, but most beginner golfers are not familiar with the standards of the PGA and so therefore ignore the importance of quality of their coaching in early stages.
I've met several excellent local coaches, but also those who neglect teaching beginners sound fundamentals. For all teachers the following two points should be a must: (1) establishing proper fundamentals with beginners that make them enjoy and the game and want to play more golf and thereby (2) ensuring return business for one's academy, range or facility. I think it is worth remembering that beginners, earnings among instructors and facility revenues can all suffer if long term quality is sacrificed in pursuit of short term profits.
