Mr. Schmidt was raised in Indiana and graduated from Purdue University in 1970 with a major in Agronomy.  After graduation, he began working for golf architect, Pete Dye, where he was a Design Associate for seven years on many projects including Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic.  Mr. Schmidt was then offered a position as Vice President of Landmark Land Company where, for twelve years, he headed their Golf Course Design and Construction Division.  During that tenure, he worked on such prominent projects as PGA WEST, La Quinta Hotel Resort & Mission Hills Resort.  Mr. Schmidt was then offered a position as Senior Design Associate for Nicklaus Design where he gained extensive international experience.  Spring City Resort in Kunming, China, Damai Indah, Jarkata, Indonesia and Nicklaus North, Whistler, British Columbia are a few of the projects where Mr. Schmidt was the lead architect that have gained international recognition.

Since co-founding Schmidt-Curley Design with partner Brian Curley in 1997, the firm has built numerous award-winning, worldrenowned golf facilities. The tandem is responsible for crafting 10 of the 12 courses at storied Mission Hills Golf Club  the “World’s Largest Golf Club” and designed and built all 10 layouts at Mission Hills’ new Hainan Island resort.  Other notable projects include Bali Hai Golf Club in Las Vegas, Landmark Golf Club, Indio, California, home of The Skins Game 1999  2002, the home course for the Southern California Section of the PGA, Beaumont, California, and Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok, site of the annual Royal Trophy, pitting Asia against Europe in Ryder Cupstyle matches.  Acclaim for SchmidtCurley includes,  Golf Magazine’s “Architect of the Year” for 2011, Asian Golf Monthly’s “Best Golf Course Architect in Asia-Pacific”  and Golf Inc.’s #4  “Most Influential Architects”.

Mr. Schmidt was recognized in 2004 by Purdue University as a Distinguished Alumni in the School of Agriculture and most recently in 2011 with his induction into the “Old Masters” program. Mr. Schmidt is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and currently serves as Secretary on the ASGCA Executive Committee.
